Understand Mastic Through the Year

LocationMastichochoria
Duration2–4 hours, or recurring seasonal modules
SeasonYear-round interpretation; cultivation tasks are seasonal.
ExperienceBegin at the Chios Mastic Museum, then explore Pyrgi, Armolia or Kalamoti and look across the cultivated mastic landscape from public roads and paths. A booked visit with a producer can add a more personal view of the work behind the island's most famous product.
UNESCO-supported cultivation sequenceMastic cultivation is a cycle of knowledge passed through families and communities: preparing the soil, making careful summer incisions in the schinos, collecting the resin and painstakingly cleaning it. Seeing the stages in context makes the landscape of southern Chios far more meaningful.
Respect private landMastic groves are working private landscapes. Stay on public routes unless you have permission or a booked visit, and never assume harvesting activities are open to casual participation.
Associated destinationsMastic Museum; Pyrgi; Armolia; Kalamoti; Mesta.
Photographyclose-up schinos, soil preparation, resin/tears, tools and hands—but only with permission on private agricultural land.
