Why this plan

A full day without driving, using the fact that the boat lands you inside the town rather than outside it.
Best for: Anyone crossing on foot, or unwilling to drive on the day.

That leaves the last hour before a sailing at 17:00 for passport control and boarding.
Before you plan around it
Local buses run to a published timetable that thins out in the early afternoon and on Sundays. Confirm the return departure at the station before you take the outward bus.
Be back at the quay a clear hour before the return sailing. Passport control, ticket collection and the queue for boarding all take longer than the walk suggests, and the boat does not wait.
