The experience

Chios Town is worth lingering in rather than treating simply as the point of arrival. Start along the lively harbour, wander up Aplotaria for shops and cafés, then cross into the quieter lanes of the Castle, where Byzantine, Genoese and Ottoman layers sit beside everyday homes. Several of the island's best museums are within easy reach, making the town an ideal place to begin understanding Chios.
