Mavra Volia
Μαύρα Βόλια
Chios's signature dark-pebble beach is unlike almost anywhere else on the island: three dramatic coves of smooth black stones, steep slopes and deep, exceptionally clear water beside Emporios. The austere volcanic landscape is the attraction as much as the swim, and the contrast between the dark shore and blue Aegean makes Mavra Volia unforgettable.

Candid note
The black stones become very hot in strong sun, so beach shoes are useful. The dramatic setting is volcanic in character; the beach is best appreciated for its geology and landscape rather than simplified 'lava beach' descriptions.
