More Monasteries & Sacred Sites
Beyond the principal monasteries, Chios holds many smaller historic monastic foundations and sacred sites scattered across the island.
The Metropolis of Chios lists numerous smaller male and female monastic foundations across the island. Notable examples include Taxiarchon at Nenita; Zoodochos Pigi Kourna at Karyes; Panagia Plakidiotissa at Kallimasia; Agia Matrona at Mesa Didyma; Panagia Episkepseos at Koini; the Dormition of the Virgin at Mesta; Agioi Anargyroi at Thymiana; Agios Georgios at Pyrgi; Agios Stefanos at Vrontados; Pera Panagia at Kardamyla; Agia Skepi at Chalkeios; Panagia Sikelia at Exo Didyma; Panagia Roukouni at Katarraktis; Agios Tryfon at Nenita; Zoodochos Pigi Vrettou at Armolia; and the Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin at Elata. Most are working religious sites with limited or no formal visitor infrastructure, so access should be arranged respectfully and locally.
